The president and the foreign minister of Iran offered their condolences to the United Arab Emirates on the passing away of the neighboring country’s President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi on Friday night sent a message to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, to offer his condolences on the death of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

In another message for his Emirati counterpart, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian offered condolences to “the brotherly and friendly government and people of the United Arab Emirates” on the passing of the president.

The president of the United Arab Emirates died at age 73 on Friday.

Sheikh Khalifa, who was battling illness for several years, had long ceased having involvement in day-to-day affairs, with his brother, Abu Dhabi’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed, seen as the de facto ruler.

Sheikh Khalifa, who has rarely been seen in official photos or at public events for years, succeeded his father and the UAE’s founder Sheikh Zayed in 2004. He suffered a stroke a decade later, keeping him largely out of public sight ever since.

The world’s tallest tower in the UAE’s emirate of Dubai is named the Burj Khalifa after the late ruler.
