An energy expert siad that the absence of Russian gas and the JCPOA negotiations are a golden opportunity for Iran to renovate its oil and gas industry and to guarantee its oil and gas exportation.

An energy expert, Mir Ghasem Momeni, said in an exclusive interview with ILNA news agency that the absence of Russian gas and the ongoing JCPOA negotiations are a golden opportunity for Iran to renovate its oil and gas industry and to guarantee its oil and gas exportation.

As regards the possibility of creating a gas bloc comprised of Iran, Turkey and Iraq to export gas to the European countries, he said that Iraq now is importing gas from Iran, and because of the infrastructural challenges it faces, it has not been able the supply the gas it needs from its domestic resources, also Turkey does not have the ability to produce gas and it secures its gas needs from Azerbaijan and Iran.

“Limitations in exporting oil and gas are another issue because exporting gas needs fixed and permanent customers and long terms contracts to cross pipelines, which countries the pipeline will pass through and is the policy of these countries in line with the Islamic Republic of Iran or not? And investors can be from which countries, all these are issues that depend on the sanctions issue,” he said.

As regards the JCPOA's current opportunity to pursue the issue of gas exports to Europe, Momeni added that energy issues are one of the reasons that European countries want to restore the Iran deal because they want to supply their needs on oil and gas from Iran in a situation that Russia is sanctioned.

He stressed that Iran is the only country that can exports gas as much as Russia and this is the opportunity that European countries can enter the area of investment in the fields of Iran's oil and gas and they can be our permanent gas customers.

He reiterated that the absence of Russian gas and the JCPOA negotiations are a golden opportunity for Iran to renovate its oil and gas industry and to guarantee its oil and gas exportation.
