A high-ranking North Korean political delegation left Beijing to pay visits to Iran and Syria, a Korean news agency reported on Monday.

The delegation is headed by Pak Myong Guk, vice-foreign minister of Democratic People Republic of Korea (DPRK), according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

The visits to Iran and Syria will be followed by the North Korean delegation's trip to Azerbaijan and Mongolia, who are members of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).

The report did not release any further detail on the visits, including the order and the exact time of their visit, but stated that 'the trip comes as the DPRK continues to seek to strengthen ties with its traditional friends and to increase trade with these countries as negotiations with the US over sanctions relief remain stalled'.

North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho visited Iran in August 2018, where he met with President Hassan Rouhani and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

The visit 'follows a closely-watched summit in Vladivostok last week between DPRK leader Kim Jong Un and Russia’s Vladimir Putin - a longtime ally of both Damascus and Tehran', KCNA reported.

Without any detail, the Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif last week said he would 'soon' visit Pyongyang.
