Syrian rebels reached a deal with Russian officers on a phased handover of their weapons and the deployment of Russian military police near the Jordanian border, a rebel spokesman said.

Ibrahim Jabawi said the agreement was reached during ongoing talks in a town in southern Syria that also includes a cessation of hostilities by both sides.

Thousands of Syrians fleeing an onslaught by the Syrian and Russian forces have amassed behind concrete slabs along the border with Jordan.

Amman, which already hosts more 1.4 million Syrian refugees, has shut its northern border to the desperate Syrians wanting to cross over for safety.

But in a humanitarian gesture, Jordan has set up a makeshift field hospital in an area of about 100 meters of a small buffer zone near the Jaber border Crossing to receive injured civilians affected by the offensive in Syria's southern Deraa province.
