US National Security Council Spokesperson Michael Anton has said the United States would fail to achieve its Iran policy objectives, if President Donald Trump followed through his threat to pull the US out of the Iran nuclear deal.

“We want more pressure on the Iranian [government] and we want some additional leverage with congress and the Europeans to fix the flaws in the deal,” Anton said in an interview with NBC on Saturday.

“If we unilaterally walked away from the deal, that wouldn’t have worked.”

Trump, an outspoken critic of the international agreement and Iran’s regional policies, refused last month to certify Tehran is compliant with restrictions it accepted under the deal on its nuclear program in return for the removal of economic sanctions.

That has given the US Congress 60 days to decide whether to reinstate sanctions.

Trump called on congress to work with Washington’s European allies to fix what he has described as “many flaws” of the deal, or he would “terminate” it.
