A former Iranian diplomat said that the recent political developments in Pakistan are partly rooted in long-running differences between Washington and Islamabad.

The former Iranian attaché in Afghanistan, Abdolmohammad Taheri, said in an exclusive interview with ILNA that the Pakistani government has repeatedly had tensions with the United States, and these tensions have escalated over the past five years.

He said that the Pakistanis have been in tension with the Americans since the elimination of Osama bin Laden and the 9/11 attacks.

“Right now, Islamabad is in full coordination with the Taliban, rather than with Washington,” he added.

Commenting on the recent developments in Pakistan, he said that the political conflict between Pakistan and the United States is public and it seems that part of the recent developments is rooted in this conflict.

“Basically, the sharif family does not get much involved with the religious and traditional factions of Pakistan,” he said.

“On the other hand, it should be noted that the Sharif family has a good relationship with the Pakistani army, and there are individuals in the army and ISI who are in line with this family.”
