A Persian Gulf State to Host Talks on Removal of Iran Sanctions in Days: Spokesman
The time and venue of negotiations on the removal of sanctions against Iran have almost been finalized, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Saeed Khatibzadeh said, noting that the talks will kick off in a Persian Gulf country within the next days.
Speaking to reporters at a weekly press conference on Monday, Khatibzadeh said the negotiations on lifting the sanctions against Iran will be held in one of the Persian Gulf littoral countries in the coming days.
“The time and venue of negotiations have been almost determined. The final decisions in this regard will be made soon,” he added.
On the recent visit to Tehran by EU Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell, Khatibzadeh said one of the topics discussed during the trip was the need for the US to honor all of its commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
Confirming an agreement on the “content and format”, the Iranian spokesman said it is not still clear whether the US has abandoned the legacy of its former president Donald Trump.
“The US has shown how unreliable it is and that it does not honor commitments,” he stated.
The spokesman said the outstanding issues in the upcoming talks will include disagreements about the removal of the sanctions. “The ball is in the court of Washington, and if it comes (to the talks) with a response, it will be possible to be hopeful about a deal.”
He also noted that Iran’s remedial measures will be reversible, provided that the other side meets its commitments as well.
Since April 2021, several rounds of talks between Iran and the five remaining parties to the JCPOA -- Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia -- have been held in the Austrian capital to bring the US back into the Iran deal. The Vienna talks, however, exclude American diplomats due to their country’s withdrawal from the deal.
