Iran's Deputy Minister of Agriculture Jihad (MAJ) Saeed Raad has said that the guaranteed wheat purchase from domestic farmers in Iran has exceeded 10 million metric tons (mt) during the first five months of the Iranian calendar year (March 21 to August 22, 2023).
Tehran has reported a major surge in its guaranteed purchase of wheat from domestic farmers in the current Iranian calendar year ending on March 19.
Iran has purchased more than 8 million tons of wheat from domestic farmers in a national “guaranteed purchase” scheme to meet the country’s needs for the crop, according to an official with the knowledge of the matter.
Iran is concerned that Russia's invasion of Ukraine might make it harder to import wheat and corn because the two counties are major suppliers.
Iran has self-sufficient in wheat production in spite of imposing cruel sanctions against the country and after supplying the domestic needs; it joined the club of the exporters of the strategic product.
