Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman said those behind the assassination of the country’s nuclear scientists failed to achieve their objectives, stressing that the martyred scientists’ accomplishments will be protected.

“Cowardly assassination of heroes of our scientific prowess didn't help behind-the-curtain terrorists to achieve their goals,” Nasser Kanaani wrote in a tweet on Saturday, which marked the anniversary of Dariush Rezaeinejad’s assassination.

“Peaceful nuclear industry of Iran owes its flourishing to Rezayinejad & his fellows. Their blood & scientific accomplishments will be safeguarded,” he added.

Rezaeinejad was shot five times and killed near his home by a team of motorcycle-riding gunmen on July 23, 2011.

He had just picked up his daughter from kindergarten when the attack occurred. His wife and daughter were injured but survived the attack.

In August of the same year the German weekly news magazine, Der Spiegel, said that the Israeli spy agency Mossad was behind the act of terrorism.

Israeli sabotage attempts against Iran’s nuclear program have failed despite repeated Israeli assassinations of Iranian nuclear scientists and unrelenting US support.
