Russian EU Ambassador Vladimir Chizhov has said that Russia is in close contact with all the parties to the nuclear deal (JCPOA), as it is eager to work together with Iran and EU in line with preserving the JCOPA.

The JCPOA stands for Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the official name of the agreement reached between Iran and six world major powers in 2015 to give Tehran sanctions relief in return for scaling back its nuclear program.

He made the remarks in an interview with German TV network Deutsche Welle which was released on Saturday.

Chizhov said that US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal would be 'dangerous,” adding that he fears that the threat of the move would go beyond the deal and Iran.

Asked how Russia will respond to a likely US exit from the JCPOA, he said, “We are in close contact with all the other parties, signatories, including the Iranians, and we are looking into the matter.'

Iran nuclear deal was clinched as a result of marathon talks among six countries and European External Action Service, which acted as coordinator of the efforts, he said, noting that the aim was to conclude a deal to prevent Iran from undertaking a military nuclear program on the one hand, and lift sanctions against it on the other.

Stressing that the agreement is a major diplomatic achievement by all the parties including the US, he said that if the US ‘closes door to the deal’, it will be in violation of a deal verified by the United Nations Security Council.

Asked whether Russian President Vladimir Putin has talked with his US counterpart in this respect, he told DW the Kremlin has sent many 'signals' urging Donald Trump not to go through with his threat to quit.

While the US President Donald Trump has set a deadline, May 12, for fixing alleged flaws of the JCPOA and threatened to leave the deal if they are not amended, other parties to the JCPOA have stepped up their diplomatic efforts to preserve the deal.

In this regard, Russia and China released a joint statement in support of the JCPOA, the official name of 2015 nuclear deal reached between Iran and six world major powers.

Director of Russian Foreign Ministry's Department for Non-Proliferation and Arms Control Vladimir Yermakov earlier said that over 120 member states of NPT backed Russia-China joint statement in support of JCPOA.
