Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif is to visit Turkey in the near future, Turkish Ambassador Reza Hakan Tekin announced.

“Zarif will travel to Turkey in the coming days,” Hakan Tekin said on Sunday during a ceremony in Tehran for commemorating his country’s Republic Day.

Several Iranian officials, journalists and foreign envoys attended the ceremony.

The Republic Day of Turkey, a public holiday in Turkey and Northern Cyprus, commemorates the proclamation of the republic in 1923.

Describing Iran and Turkey as close neighbors, the Turkish envoy said a “special” chapter has opened in mutual ties.

“Enhanced cooperation between Iran and Turkey can help promote peace and stability in the region, as Astana talks have contributed to the Syria peace process,” Hakan Tekin said.

A new round of Syria peace talks brokered by Iran, Russia and Turkey is ongoing in the Kazakh capital Astana.

Expert-level talks began on Sunday and high-level talks will continue until Wednesday.

Syria has been beset by civil war since March 2011.
