Astana Process is a successful initiative: Expert
An expert on the region has said that the Astana mechanism is a successful initiative in favor of the Syrian government.
Astana mechanism has had successful results during past years, Alireza Majidi said in an exclusive interview with ILNA.
Because the Astana mechanism was consistent with the reality on the ground, it soon showed its impact in the field, he added.
He emphasized that the Astana initiative created the capacity to declare a ceasefire in different operational fronts and allow the Syrian army to focus on a specific operational axis.
On the ground, the equations of Syria have completely changed and the balance of power has noticeably changed in favor of Damascus, he added.
In the past, less than 25% of the Syrian territory was under the control of the army, but now two-thirds of the Syrian territory is under the administrative and military control of Damascus, he noted.
In the political field, the Astana mechanism took the initiative, he said, adding that “the progress of the Geneva process was stopped and reduced to a minimum.”
