An expert on Eurasia has said that the simultaneous presence of Biden and Putin in the Middle East is so important and it is interpreted as a kind of show of force in the region.

Vali Kalegi referred to the aims of Putin’s visit to Tehran in the current situation to attend the 7th summit of the Astana peace talks on Syria and said that “this visit is important for Russia because this country is facing widespread sanctions by the western world.”

He noted that this visit is important for Russia because Moscow wants to show that it didn’t turn into an isolated country, adding that Russia is looking for a resort to get rid of sanctions and Iran is one of those resorts.

He highlighted Iran’s transit situation, food issue, and Iran and Russia's joint investments as three important issues that will be raised in the Astana summit in Tehran.

The fourth issue is Syria, he said, adding that the Ukraine war has led to the reduction of Russian military focus on Syria.

In the meantime, Turkey has increased its activities and seeks a huge military war against northern Syria that has concerned Iran and Russia, he added.

Certainly, this issue will be on the trilateral meeting’s agenda in Tehran, he noted.

The expert on Eurasia also commented on the speculations about the simultaneity of the visits of the presidents of the U.S. and Russia to the Middle East, adding that the simultaneous presence of Biden and Putin in the Middle East and the situation of the Ukraine war is so important and it is interpreted as a kind of show of force in the region.

Tehran on Tuesday will host the 7th summit of the Astana peace talks on Syria in the presence of Iran’s president and his Russian and Turkish counterparts Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, respectively.
