With the Iran government's measures in recent years, the country has been freed of wheat imports and the volume of imports has reached zero.

According to ILNA news agency report, The Iranian government needs no more wheat imports thanks to the favorable crop harvest and procurement from local farmers at a time of declining grain stocks around the world.

Self-sufficiency in wheat production may have been one of the most important things that Tehran was able to do to counter the threats to the country's food security; because Iran’s enemies do not hesitate to take any action to hit the country.

Three years ago, Iran officially announced its self-sufficiency in wheat production, and now, in addition to providing domestic demand, Tehran can export wheat to other countries of the world.

Vice Chairman of the National Foundation of Wheat Farmers Empowerment Aligoli Imani said to ILNA news agency correspondent that importance of wheat self-sufficiency is so high and any shortage can lead to social, economic and political insecurity.

He added “Wheat is the most important meal of Iranian households, and so lack of wheat can lead to dissatisfaction and social insecurity.”

In its latest report on Iran’s agricultural sector, the Business Monitor International estimates that Iran’s wheat production will reach 16 million tons by 2019-20 and wheat yields are expected to improve, because of the use of modern technology, greater access to inputs and a larger area of the country benefiting from new irrigation facilities.

Aligoli Imani said “If Iran had to import 7 tonnes of wheat like before; it needed at least $ 1.5 billion in funding, which could have a negative impact on the country's economy.”

Iran has played an effective role in neutralizing the US measures against the food security in Iran by increasing the volume of strategic reserves, reducing dependency and vast storage of basic goods.
