An expert on energy has said that Iran is the best transit route for Turkmenistan.

Commenting on energy cooperation between Iran and Turkmenistan, Mir Ghasem Momeni told ILNA that the two countries had energy cooperation in the past years and Iran was active in the Turkmenistan gas and oil swap.

Underlining that Iran’s foreign policy priority is based on boosting relations with neighboring countries, he said that political issues or sabotages of political rivals like Turkey or enemies such as Israel have always been an obstacle to establishing strategic relations between Iran and neighboring countries.

Turkmenistan has considerable oil and gas potential and it has transit routes like Khazar and Tajikistan but the best route for Turkmen oil and gas exports is Iran.

Expressing that the issue of sanctions always is an obstacle to Iran, he said, "Turkmenistan has buyers like India and Pakistan but Iran is the best choice that can play the role of being an energy swap route for this country."

As long as the sanctions against Iran are not removed and Iran is unable to transfer money, Tehran can’t use its transit potential, he added.
