Former Pakistani diplomat told that US domestically benefits from Guantanamo prison.

"Sekandar Ahmad Shah", legal advisor of "Hana Rabani Khar", Former Pakistani Foreign Minister regarding legal and political dimensions of keeping Guantanamo detention camp open, in an interview with ILNA told that neither "Barak Obama", former US president nor "Donald Trump", current president of the country are interested in closing the Guantanamo camp.

Regarding the reasons for using a camp outside the country’s borders told: "When someone enters the US territory, there are rights that would immidiately get applied to that person. The government has opened the center outside the country to prevent the detainees from obtaining such legal benefits."

"According to the US regulations, after finishing the time in custody, the person should start legal procedures in court, and in case his crimes have been confirmed should be jailed. But Guantanamo detainees, since the time of their arrest, are in 6 months detaining period, which has been repeatedly extended since then" human right activist added.

Ahmad Shah continued that since these people are still detained, can’t benefit from international conventions’ benefits on protecting their rights.

Regarding the probability of closing the camp, the international expert deemed the possibility low, since the US government is using the camp as a tool for its specific purposes.

Refusing speculations about replacing France by the US in Middle East as a regional power, he told: "In my view, since France is committed to the EU and NATO, such prospect is inconceivable and they won’t act independently in this regard."

International relation expert also emphasized that Russia’s powerful presence in the Middle East won’t let another less empowered country to enter the region actively.”
