Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi said the unified, stable and democratic Iraq will guarantee Iraqi people’s interests.

Qasemi made the remarks on Saturday in response to a unilateral decision taken by Iraqi Kurdistan with regard to holding referendum, saying Iran's principled stance is to support integrity and sovereignty of Iraq.

Iraqi Kurdistan is a part of Iraq and taking unilateral decisions outside the national and regulatory framework, particularly Iraq’s constitutional law and in such a complicated situation of the country and the region will result in creating new problems.

Today, Iraq requires peace and national unity and the disputes between Erbil and Baghdad should be resolved through negotiations, national reconciliation and based upon Iraq’s constitutional law.

The Iraqi Kurdish parties in the absence of Kurdistan Islamic Group, met with President of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region Masoud Barzani on June 7 to coordinated with him holding a referendum on September 25.

Highlighting the need to hold parliamentary elections in Iraqi Kurdistan and to choose the president of the region, all parties agreed on holding the event on November 6.

The referendum will respectively be held sooner than Iraqi Kurdistan elections which is what oppositions reject.
