Iran - IAEA agree to speed up cooperation

ILNA: Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Abbas Araqchi who is in Vienna said after a 2 - hour meeting with the International Atomic Energy Agency(IAEA) Secretary General Yukiya Amano that the two sides have agreed to boost mutual cooperation.

Speaking to reporters, the Iranian diplomat maintained that the meeting had been very effective, IRIB news agency reported on Feb. ۲۴.

“We are able to investigate Iran - IAEA cooperation; and having in mind the role of the IAEA in any prospective agreement between Iran and Group P۵ + ۱, we decided to speed up our cooperation, ” he stated.

He further pointed out that his meeting with Amano related to cooperation between Iran and the agency and was intended to resolve “issues remaining from the past” as well as adopting policies on current issues.

Araqchi also noted that in a recent meeting between Amano and Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, the two had agreed to boost mutual cooperation at higher levels.

The IAEA’s most recent report on Iran’s nuclear program was published on Feb. ۱۹. There, the agency had stated that two topics had remained from a previously agreed arrangement for Iran to cover as part of efforts to clarify its nuclear activities.

The visit followed ۴ days of intensive talks between diplomats and experts from Iran and the Group P۵ + ۱(the US, UK, France, Russia, China, and Germany) in Geneva.

Araqchi had previously visited Vienna on October ۲۸,۲۰۱۳ as the first high - ranking Iranian diplomat within the Rouhani administration to meet the IAEA secretary general. Experts believe that meeting opened a new chapter in Iran - IAEA relations.

The next round of Iran - P۵ + ۱ talks will be held in Geneva next Monday.

The latest of talks was for the first time attended by Chairman of Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Ali Akbar Salehi and US Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz. The two attended the talks to discuss detailed technical issues.

The talks between Iran and the P۵ + ۱(the US, UK, France, Russia, China, and Germany) were extended until June ۳۰,۲۰۱۵ to reach a comprehensive nuclear agreement. However, the sides attempt to reach a political accord in March.

After the parties failed to meet the November ۲۴,۲۰۱۴ deadline they also extended the Geneva nuclear deal, which was signed in November ۲۰۱۳ for providing Iran with some sanctions relief in exchange for Tehran agreeing to limit certain aspects of its nuclear activities.
