Moscow has created opportunity for Iranian exporters

ILNA: Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Moscow here Thursday said the Russian government has created a golden opportunity for Iranian exporters of foodstuff, dairy, meat and aquatic products.

Mehdi Sanaei who was speaking on the sidelines of an International Investment Opportunities Conference told that Iranian exporters should take advantage of the opportunity as Russia annually imports $۴۰ billion worth of fruits, vegetables and dairy products.

He said an outstanding part of dairy products, fruits and vegetables needed by Russia used to be imported from the US, Europe, Australia and Canada but now that Moscow is under the Western sanctions the Russian government has announced its interest in increasing imports from Iran.

Sanaei said that in line with the announced interest, during recent months several meetings have been held with Iranian agriculture minister, tradesmen and large dairy companies in that country.

Pointing to the opportunities provided in Russia for increasing exports of fruits and vegetables from Iran, the ambassador said those opportunities should be used due to the proper condition emerged in Russia, adding that the Iranian Embassy will offer the required cooperation.

He said the volume of Iran - Russia trade amounted to over $۴ billion by the end of ۱۳۹۰(۲۰۱۱-۲۰۱۲), adding that it dropped to half due to the sanctions and the consequent difficulties.

Of course, he added, under the administration of the new government in Iran and changes in foreign policy which prepared the ground for further cooperation with Russia, the downward trend stopped. He hoped for the growth of transactions in the next sixth months when the volume of trade can be estimated.

He referred to the signing of a memorandum of understanding for peaceful nuclear cooperation and the second and third power plants in Bushehr with outstanding economic value and said implementation of the projects will develop transactions between the two countries.
