Iran ready to form regional convention on nuclear safety

ILNA: Chairman of the Atomic Energy Organization Ali Akbar Salehi said Iran is ready to establish a regional gathering on safety to monitor activities of nuclear power plants inside Iran and in other regional states.

Salehi made the remarks here in a ceremony to sign an agreement for cooperation between AEOI and the Department of Environment on issues related radioecology.

The agreement includes supervising all nuclear activities and their effects on environment both inside Iran and in its neighboring states.

Referring to the fact that Iran’s neighboring states plan to construct nuclear power plants, including the United Arab Emirates that is building four atomic power plants, Salehi added a regional convention on safety would make it possible that all regional states, including Iran’s neighbors, act within the framework and under permanent supervision of the convention.

According to the ۱۱ - article document, AEOI is responsible to monitor various effects of nuclear radiation on different aspects of environment including soil, water and air.

This is a must to save the Iranian nation from radiation - related problems, Salehi stressed.

He expressed willingness to “negotiate with neighboring states of Iran, in cooperation with the Department of Environment and Foreign Ministry, about issues related to radioecology. ”

“Iran is also interested in exchanging data with its neighbors on radioecological issues for making necessary preparations to reduce damage of any possible difficult time in the future, ” Salehi added.
